Web analytics for SaaS: track signups, activation and growth

If you run a SaaS product, you need to know where signups come from, whether trials activate, which campaigns drive paid conversions, and how users move between your marketing site and your product.

Google Analytics can technically do all of this. But it’s built for ad teams, not product and growth teams. The interface is complex, GA4 made reporting harder, and your technical audience is more likely than average to block it. So your data is incomplete before you’ve done anything wrong.

Plausible gives you accurate, privacy-friendly analytics built for the SaaS journey: from first visit to signup to activation to upgrade.

The problem with Google Analytics for SaaS

SaaS teams are particularly exposed to GA’s data quality problems.

Your typical user is a developer, founder or technical decision-maker. These are exactly the users most likely to run an ad blocker or privacy-focused browser. Brave, Firefox with Enhanced Tracking Protection and uBlock Origin all block Google Analytics by default. On a SaaS site with a technical audience, 30% or more of traffic may go uncounted.

GA also requires cookie consent under GDPR and CCPA. When users decline, their sessions aren’t tracked, and the consent banner itself adds friction before users reach your signup form.

On top of that, GA4 replaced simple reporting with a custom event model that requires significant configuration to answer basic questions like “which channel drives the most trial signups?”

Plausible is a simpler, more accurate alternative that avoids these problems without asking you to give up the insights you rely on.

You get accurate data from day one

Because Plausible is privacy-friendly by default, it isn’t blocked at the same rate as Google Analytics. You immediately see more of your actual traffic.

We also take additional steps to improve data accuracy:

  • Known referrer spam and data center traffic is filtered out automatically. We exclude around 32,000 data center IP ranges by default to prevent bots from inflating your numbers.
  • Android app traffic (traditionally lumped into “Direct”) is identified separately, recovering 10% or more of unattributed visits from apps like Gmail, Slack and Telegram.
  • We support proxying our script as a first-party connection for even higher accuracy on sites where ad blocker rates are high.

The result is data you can act on, not numbers you have to discount by an estimated correction factor.

Switching is straightforward

You don’t have to lose your history when you move away from Google Analytics. You can import past stats so trends and year-over-year comparisons stay intact inside Plausible.

Our import tool automatically detects time ranges to prevent double counting or gaps in your data.

Install takes minutes via script tag, Google Tag Manager or any of our integration guides. You can run Plausible alongside GA during the transition to compare results before removing anything.

Track the full SaaS funnel

Know where your traffic comes from

Our dashboard gives you everything you need on one page. At a glance you can see:

  • Number of visitors and pageviews
  • Where your visitors are located
  • What devices, browsers and operating systems they use
  • Which referral sources are driving traffic
  • Which pages visitors land on and where they go next
  • Bounce rate and visit duration by source

You can see our live demo for full details.

Goals and events: from visit to paid

You can track any action you want visitors to take: visiting a pricing page, clicking a signup button, completing registration or reaching a key activation milestone.

Each goal shows you completions, conversion rate and which referral sources are driving those completions. So when your growth team asks which channel delivers the most paying customers, not just the most signups, Plausible can answer it. Here are the instructions on how to get started with goals and events.

Funnel analysis

Once you have goals set up, you can chain them into a funnel to see where visitors drop off between steps. A typical SaaS funnel might track: visited pricing → started trial → completed onboarding → upgraded to paid.

Funnel analysis shows you exactly where the conversion breaks down. Here are the instructions on how to get started with funnels.

Cross-subdomain tracking

Most SaaS products span multiple domains: a marketing site, an app on a subdomain and a docs site. Plausible can track the full visitor journey across all of them.

The original referral source stays attributed to the visitor as they move between subdomains. A signup that completes on app.yourproduct.com is still credited to the blog post that started the journey on yourproduct.com. No internal referrals to filter out.

See more on hostname and subdomain tracking.

Track marketing campaigns using UTM tags

UTM parameters let you identify which campaigns and content pieces drive signups, not just visits. Dark traffic from emails, messenger apps and bookmarks won’t show a referrer source by default. Tagging your links with utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign puts that attribution in your dashboard automatically.

You can track:

  • Email drip campaigns and product newsletters
  • Paid social and sponsored content
  • Partner and affiliate traffic
  • Guest posts and content syndication

See “how to use UTM parameters to track your campaigns”.

See organic search and AI traffic clearly

The dashboard includes a dedicated Organic Search channel showing how much of your traffic comes from search engines. This also includes traffic from AI assistants and AI-powered search tools, giving you a more complete picture of how people discover your product.

Connect Google Search Console to see which queries and pages drive organic signups, alongside engagement and conversion data.

Add custom properties to track product dimensions

You can attach metadata to any event or pageview to track dimensions Plausible doesn’t capture automatically. For SaaS, common uses include:

  • Tagging signups with plan type or pricing tier
  • Tracking which experiment variant a visitor saw
  • Measuring feature adoption events
  • Comparing engagement across product areas

You can then filter and segment your dashboard by those properties to answer questions about your product, not just your marketing site. Learn more about custom properties for events and for pageviews.

Plausible is compliant with GDPR, CCPA and PECR out of the box. No cookies, no personal data, no consent banner required.

For SaaS, this matters beyond compliance. A cookie consent popup is friction at the top of your funnel. Removing it means no decline rates reducing your data quality and no interruption before users reach your signup form.

You own and control all your data. We don’t sell or share it with third parties and we don’t use it for advertising. See full details on what makes Plausible a privacy-first web analytics tool.

Share analytics with your team and stakeholders

You can invite teammates and assign roles: view-only access to the dashboard or full access to edit settings and manage collaborators. See more on user accounts and roles.

Set up weekly or monthly email reports for stakeholders who want a regular summary without logging in. Or generate a private shared link for investors, advisors or board members who want to check numbers without needing an account.

Build custom reports with Looker Studio

If you need advanced reporting, the Looker Studio connector lets you pull Plausible data into custom dashboards. Combine it with data from your CRM, ad platforms or revenue tools for a more complete view of your growth funnel.
